6G di 2020, Teknologi atau Politik?
Apa itu 6G? Kalau mengikuti perkembangan berita teknologi, belakangan kita sering mendengar istilah 5G. Secara logis, 6G mestinya kelanjutan dari 5G. Mengapa membicarakan 6G padahal era 5G saja belum atau baru dimulai, bahkan masih harus melewati banyak tahapan sampai betul-betul proven di level publik dan massal?
Beberapa waktu lalu muncul berita-berita tentang 6G yang dipicu oleh kesuksesan China dalam meluncurkan satelit yang diklaim sebagai generasi jaringan 6G. Apa yang dimaksud dengan 6G disini? Berikut ini kita coba telusuri beberapa sumber.
Situs popularmechanics.com secara singkat menyinggung isu ini dan mengkaitkannya dengan situasi 5G. “Sementara mereka terus mencoba meyakinkan pelanggan seluler tentang kehebatan 5G, para operator dan vendor mulai mengalihkan fokus mereka ke 6G. Ini indikasi awal bahwa 6G bisa menjadi medan tarik-ulur politik, seperti halnya yang terjadi dengan 5G.”
Pada bulan November, pemerintah China mengumumkan melalui Twitter,
bahwa mereka telah mengirim 13 satelit ke orbit, termasuk satu yang dibuat oleh
Pusat Riset Satelit Taiyuan dan diklaim sebagai “Satelit Percobaan 6G Pertama di Dunia”.
Eksperimen yang dimaksud mencakup transmisi melalui
“Spektrum Terahertz”, frekuensi di atas 100 GHz, yang diproyeksikan untuk
aplikasi-aplikasi baru Internet of Things (IoT).
Pemerintah China bermaksud menggunakan spektrum Terahertz dalam beberapa eksperimen
untuk smart-city (kota pintar), pemantauan lingkungan, dan aplikasi mitigasi bencana seperti
monitoring kebakaran lahan/hutan.
Klaim yang dilakukan China tentu sah dan normal. Hanya saja seluruh dunia masih berada pada posisi beberapa tahun lagi untuk menyetujui apa yang akan menjadi 6G.
5G - yang dianggap jaringan broadband seluler generasi kelima dan terbaru - masih berada dalam tahap awal. Jaringan 5G sejatinya beroperasi dalam frekuensi gelombang milimeter antara 30 dan 300 Gigahertz, yang 10 hingga 100 kali lebih tinggi daripada frekuensi jaringan seluler 4G sebelumnya.
Definisi generasi seluler ini ditentukan oleh kemitraan global yang dikenal sebagai 3GPP, yang belum secara jelas mendefinisikan 6G. Melihat sejarah perkembangan teknologi sebelumnya, tidak dapat dipungkiri bahwa 5G akan digantikan oleh jaringan baru di masa depan. Namun, apa yang akan menjadi bagian dari 6G masih harus melewati proses dan waktu yang panjang.
Satelit yang dikenal sebagai Tianyan-5, adalah satelit penginderaan jauh yang dikembangkan bersama oleh beberapa lembaga riset China. Selain penginderaan, Tianyan-5 akan menguji transponder komunikasi di spektrum Terahertz. Ketika jaringan seluler menjadi semakin padat, dan permintaan untuk kecepatan yang lebih tinggi dan latensi yang lebih rendah terus naik, adalah natural untuk melirik penggunaan frekuensi yang lebih tinggi untuk teknologi seluler berikutnya. Hal ini karena bandwidth atau kapasitas komunikasi data berbanding proporsional dengan frekuensi yang digunakan.
Gelombang Terahertz (THz), yang merupakan gelombang submillimeter yang terletak di antara gelombang mikro dan cahaya inframerah pada spektrum elektromagnetik, telah dibuktikan untuk transmisi data dengan kecepatan lebih dari 100 Gbps. Hanya saja, gelombang ini juga sangat rentan terhadap gangguan dan pengaruh lingkungan terutama redaman oleh uap air di atmosfer. Masalah ini yang tetap menjadi tantangan untuk 5G di gelombang millimeter, dan tentu akan lebih besar lagi tantangannya untuk 6G jika menggunakan gelombang submillimeter.

Sebelumnya, pada bulan Mei, vendor telekomunikasi ZTE mengumumkan bahwa mereka bekerja sama dengan China Unicom, salah satu dari tiga operator jaringan utama China, untuk berkolaborasi dalam pengembangan teknologi 6G.
Cina tentu saja tidak sendirian dalam urusan 6G ini. Pada bulan Juni, Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), yang mempunyai misi membantu meningkatkan peran vendor/operator yang berbasis di AS seiring perkembangan teknologi ke 5G and beyond, menyerukan aksi bersama pemerintah, akademisi, dan industri untuk bekerja-sama lintas sektoral untuk membangun tempat berpijak 6G di AS. Aksi ini kemudian menjelma dalam pembentukan ‘Next G Alliance’ pada bulan Oktober, dengan fokus utama pada 6G. Anggota pendiri aliansi ini mencakup ketiga operator seluler utama AS, Verizon, AT&T, dan T-Mobile, serta operator yang lebih kecil, US Cellular. Selain itu, juga terlibat raksasa teknologi Facebook serta beberapa vendor infrastruktur Amerika Utara.
Sementara itu, Korea Selatan, negara yang pertama kali menerapkan 5G secara nasional, juga tidak ingin ketinggalan untuk memposisikan diri sebagai leader dalam 6G. Produsen smartphone dan infrastruktur Samsung pada bulan Juli lalu mengeluarkan whitepaper dengan visi 6G-nya. Visi tersebut mencakup aplikasi streaming AR (Augmented Reality) dalam resolusi 8K serta aplikasi hologram dengan ketelitian tinggi.
